In the painting by Hieronymus Bosch entitled “The Cure of Folly”, a brave but foolish patient allows a doctor to poke about inside his head to search for the stone he thinks is causing his mental distress. Since prehistoric times people have been drilling into other peoples’ heads. It is only recently there has been an argument for doing so that should convince anyone.

While I was making this piece, a young man from Strasbourg paid me a visit. We talked of Strasbourg’s famous son, Tomi Ungerer, who often depicts painful gratuitous assaults in his colourful books for children.
