“I remember thinking that calling it ‘Untitled’ sort of says enough. It’s almost unique among my works in having had a showing in the Penwith Gallery in St Ives, where famous artists show their work. Nobody wanted to buy it*.

Technical note: the carrot came about because I miscounted the number of letters in the message and could only fit a small vegetable into the two spaces I had left. The expression ‘Serving Suggestion’ had been waiting in my mind for some time after I’d seen a packet of Asda’s oat cakes decorated with an artistically balanced arrangement of biscuits, cucumber and blue cheese.

* I did make a sale at the Penwith though: I’d also exhibited a small sculpture of Mr Punch priced at 10p. I think they still owe me my 5p. ”
