Description

This one-off piece was made by Paul Spooner in 1991. Turn the handle and Anubis sways on his hammock between two asparagus spears.

The label on the side reads: This so-called mechanical sculpture clearly shows an all-too-common resort of the hopeless automatist. The thing does hardly anything, yet we are expected to gasp in awe and wonder at the amazing cleverness of it all. Pull the other one we say.

There is a handwritten label on the base reading ‘CERTIFICATE OF UNIQUENESS. This object is unique in western civilisation and I’m not making another nor is Matt Smith. Yrs sincerely, P. Spooner’ This is written in black over red stamped letters which read ‘For good food and friendly service’

Second Hand – Originally purchased at Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, Covent Garden, London.

Good repaired condition. Anubis has a new lower leg which was carved by P.Spooner in 2024. The base is flocked with green to look like grass and is quite worn in places.
