“Most people know two things about Cuckoos: that they pop out of clocks and that they lay their eggs in other birds’ nests so that their oversized offspring get a start in life that their parents are unwilling or unable to provide. So far very few artisan mechanics have amalgamated these two factors in their inventories. The P. Spooner Garden Factory of Stithians, Cornwall has come up with this prototype which is interesting in about two ways: firstly, the unusual application of a length of cuckoo clock chain to a mechanism that converts a small rotary motion to a larger vertical lift and secondly that someone has taken the trouble to cater to the vanishingly small demand for a cuckoo clock with displacement action.

As is usual with prototypes, this one falls short of the original impulse. To make a more realistic demonstration of the of the parasite lifestyle, it seemed proper to eject the baby birds completely from their nest. However, this would clash with the interests of the householder who might not have the time to reload the clock with fresh victims every hour- or every fifteen minutes if it was built on the quarter chiming system. As a compromise, the baby birds are only ejected a certain distance, still attached to wires so that they return to the nest when the action resets.”
