This object was made to show how actions in two different planes can be driven from a pair of cams turning on one axis. At that stage it was simply a mechanical exercise. That wasn’t too hard to do, so we were encouraged to try making a figure that pats its head while rubbing its tummy. It was thought that the first piece lacked a human element so the arms, hands and sandwich were added. We swerved away from that plan when it was time to make the head; something had told us that Anubis was interested in the project. He inspired us to give the little sculpture a sleek black jackal head. In that moment everything seemed in tune with the universe. The patting and rubbing piece is yet to be realised.
