This is the third of a series of time-based objects. It contains a four-station geneva mechanism which causes a message to emerge from the top of the cat in three sudden jolts and then rapidly drop down.
Meanwhile, a separate cam and follower drops the kitten down the birth canal as the word “Now” appears. The whole performance is positive and brisk.
The dovetailed box is made from poplar wood and the mechanism is mostly Tufnol with oak followers. The cat is carved from lime wood and spattered with Liquitex acrylic paint. The top of the cat’s body is removable for maintenance or to satisfy curiosity.
Other pieces in the series are planned, the intention is to mark those occasions when an awaited event finally arrives, often taking the victim by surprise; birth, death and decay have already been dealt with but there is scope for bankruptcy, police investigations, bad school reports, damp living conditions, unattended art exhibitions, or even unsolicited acts of kindness still remaining to be explored.’
